May 1st through the 7th is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Most children with mental health challenges do not get the help they need. Some amazing statistics include:

  • Half of adolescents with impairing mental disorders never receive treatment
  • Fewer than 1 in 5 adolescents with anxiety, eating, or substance use disorders receive treatment for those disorders.
  • More than 6 in 10 U.S. youth have been exposed to violence within the past year, including witnessing a violent act, assault with a weapon, sexual victimization, child maltreatment, and dating violence. Nearly 1 in 10 was injured.

In an effort to help further educate families, the Harrison County Parent/Educator Resource Center (PERC) is hosting a Children’s Mental Health Information and Resource Panel on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM at the ALC (Former Gore Middle School). This FREE, informal presentation is open to students, parents, educators, and community members to familiarize them with agencies and key organizations who provide services and programs in Harrison County.
